Dekalb County GA Designated Green Community - DeKalb County is one of the greenest counties in Georgia. DeKalb has been certified a "green community" by the Atlanta Regional Commission(ARC). With the designation, DeKalb becomes one of only 3 counties and 6 cities, including the City of Decatur, in Georgia to earn the designation.
CEO Burrell Ellis says "We are honored to be recognized by the ARC for our green efforts in the county. All of our initiatives, from our Green Commission to our environmentally-friendly policies, work together to enhance the quality of life for our more than 740,000 citizens,"
The Green Communities program is designed to encourage local governments to demonstrate leadership on environmental sustainability. Focus is on conserving energy, investing in renewable energy, conserving water, conserving fuel, reducing waste, and protecting and restoring the community's natural resources.

Communities are judged in 10 categories:
-
green building
-
energy efficiency
-
green power
-
water use reduction and efficiency
-

-

One way that Dekalb County is conserving water is with the Plumbing Ordinance that went into effect June of 2008. It requires homes to be installed with low flow toilets upon the sale of the property. There is a toilet retrofit rebate available.
Residents can participate in curbside recycling or can bring their recyclables to the Dekalb Farmers Market Recycle Center on Ponce de Leon.
