Appealing Property Tax in Dekalb County GA

Appealing property tax in Dekalb County GA - This week I've been busy contacting all of my clients that bought a home with me in 2009. The purpose of my call is to make sure everyone has filed for their homestead exemptions. The deadline is March 1. It only needs to be done once and then it stays in force until the status changes.

A full 50% of the homes I sold in 2009 were foreclosures. My clients got great deals. What does that mean as far as their property taxes go? It means that they could be seriously overpaying!

One of my client's homes is assessed by Dekalb County at more than 30% over what she paid for it. So she was asking me how she can get that re-assessed. I pulled some info together and sent it to her.

Here's the same information for people who want to appeal their property tax bill. The following is from the Dekalb County Tax Assessor's office:

"How do I appeal?
If you wish to appeal the value of your property, you may file a tax return with the Property Appraisal Department between January 2nd and March 1st, at which time you may declare what you consider to be the fair market value of the property. This will generate a review of the value by the Property Appraisal Department; a notice of assessment change will be sent to you in late March or early April if the Board disagrees with your value. You will then have thirty (30) days to file an appeal if you continue to disagree with the assessment as set by the Property Appraisal Department. "

Fourth of July Fireworks in and around Atlanta

4th of July Fireworks in and around Atlanta- There's so much going on this coming weekend for the 4th of July Festivities in and around Atlanta, GA.

Here are just a few of the highlights in 5 different areas of metro Atlanta:

In Decatur you can decorate your bicycle, skateboard, or wagon and join the Pied Piper Parade as it goes through downtown Decatur. Concert on the Square features the Callanwolde Concert Band. On Sunday July 4^th, Parade begins at 6:00 pm, Concert 7:00 pm and fireworks at dark.

In Avondale Estates on Saturday July 3 the Parade line up begins at 9:15 am at Avondale High School. The Parade begins at 10:00 am. Parade begins up Clarendon Ave. Food will be sold at Lake Avondale by the Avondale Baptist Church 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. The Atlanta Blue Notes performs at Lake Avondale at 7:30 p.m. Fireworks begin at Dusk at Lake Avondale.

At Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta starting at noon on July 4^th there will be activities for the entire family, including a Kids Zone, live musical entertainment starts at 5 pm. from The Regulars Band, Sons of Sailors and Party on the Moon, food concessions and the largest fireworks display in the Southeast. Fireworks begin at 9:40 p.m.

Fireworks and Live Music at Centennial Olympic Park will be on Sunday July 4 in downtown Atlanta, GA. Kids activities are from noon to 4 pm.. Free musical entertainment begins at 5 p.m. Fireworks at dark. This will be broadcast on 11 Alive News and simulcast on Q100 Radio.

Stone Mountain Park has fireworks and a laser light show with music. The laser light show is July 3- 5^th . Bring blankets and lawn chairs for this event. It is $10 per vehicle to enter the park. This is a good family event whether it's the 4^th of July or not.

There's so much going on this coming weekend for the 4th of July Festivities in and around Atlanta, GA.

Decatur Beach Party

The Decatur Beach Party is back again. On Friday June 18th from 5 p.m. to Midnight downtown Decatur GA will be turned into a beach. For those that don't know, Decatur is no where near a beach, so this is a lot of fun for us.

Decatur brings in 60 tons of sand and turns the square into a beach for this annual event. Ponce de Leon Ave will be closed between Church Street and Clairmont Ave. There will be dancing to the beach music from the live band. Activities include children's boardwalk games, face painting and wading pools in the sand. I'm sure some will build sandcastles too.

Adults $6.50 in advance, available for online purchase here, and $10 at the gate; children 12 and under, free (limit two children per paying adult).

Just like anywhere else, there are rules. So, no coolers, glass or pets allowed please. Sponsored by Decatur Business Association. Proceeds from this annual fundraiser benefit downtown improvement projects.

Oakhurst Elementary Online Auction

The Oakhurst Elementary School Online Auction will be open until April 16th, 2010. Proceeds from this auction will benefit students of Oakhurst Elementary School in Decatur, GA by funding 2010-2011 field trip experiences.

Support your local Decatur elementary school by donating to the Online Auction. There is artwork, haircuts, plants, and crafts among the offerings, plus local businesses offer gift certificates or services. There is also things from teeth whitening to routers.

The auction will be open for bids April 12 through April 16, 2010. All proceeds benefit Oakhurst Elementary Field Trips. That means it pays for all students for the next full school year of field trips!
